Welcome ladies and gents to the third round critiques. This round, we wanted you to show us some avant garde fashion.
We'll start off by critiquing all of the photos this round.
Deepika
Bingbing: This round, I'm not too worried about how flattering the fashion looks on you. I told you all to take risks and I will definitely reward that. The outfit is a bit bulky, but it's different and I like that. Your face is looking a little too harsh for my liking, but that's about the only complaint I have here.
Amanda: You seem to be wearing relics, so the theme is solid here. But yeah, the top is rather bulky, but that's not bad per se. I don't think your face is a little off, but rather... it's not what it could be. It's much better than on your sexy shot, but I see a model trying to be fierce but not quite getting there. It's still fine, don't worry about that. I like this, but I don't think I love it.
Emma: I like this shot. Your face is a little off for me, but I do think it's quite Avant Garde, if not a little medieval. I'm more a fan of the skirt than the top, which looks a little stiff, but the crown is a nice touch. Solid submission, and I think you should be fine with it.
Jennifer: I think you nailed the theme so props on that. I also really like your pose in this shot. Your face is the weak part of this photo but that's really my own personal complaint than anything. Good work!
Jensen: Yea, the face, not doing it for me. The outfit and pose are great!
James
Bingbing: This theme might have been a bit too difficult for the guys. I'll have to keep that in mind for future co-ed outlines. That said, I do think you did the best you could with a difficult theme. I do like your fashion and it's one of the better poses we're likely to see from a screenshot. In the end, it is a screenshot and it's obvious that it is, but I appreciate the effort.
Amanda: I was pretty certain a guy was going to go out this week because this theme does not cater to males much at all. I don't think that's going to be you. Yeah, I know we can't see your eyes here - but that's because you're Cyclops and you need them to shoot lasers. Which are probably stronger than mine and cause recoil...
...well, I'm not livid, just demonstrating! XD
I don't have many complaints or praises about this. The quality is a tad off and the posing looks a tad strange for some reason, but I like the setting even if this is a production still, and respect that you worked with what you had. You worked with what you had, and I respect you for that.
Emma: I did a brief scan of your portfolio, because, quite honestly, I was worried about you this week. And the first thing I said to myself is: "He needs to use a Cyclops picture." And you did. Fortunately for you, I respect that you worked with what you got. Unfortunately for you, and I think you realize this, it's not the strongest we're going to see this round. However, I don't think it's awful. With a little more clarity, and perhaps a little less of a movie still feel to it, and it'd be a good shot. I'm happy you tried your best, and I hope it pays off for you!
Jennifer: Given your options for this round, I think you worked well with what you had. I'm not a huge fan of it on its own but again, considering what you had to work with, I think this is a solid submission.
Jensen: This is actually good James. Obviously a hard theme for male celebrities. I'm glad you explained yourself because it helps sell the picture.
Jennifer
Bingbing: Well, this is obviously a joke, so no use in giving an actual critique this round.
Amanda: You know how mean I'm supposed to be to this photo, right? I don't even know if it's worth the effort to rip this to shreds. It's that bad.
Emma: So, um, this is for real then?
Jennifer: No, just no
Jensen: Two seconds it took me to find an avant garde photo of Jennifer.
Keira
Bingbing: I am in love with this shot. The dress is fantastic, the pose is solid, and the styling is spot on. I do like the added detail of your headpiece. It's not overly noticeable, but it adds a nice touch. Yeah, the shot could have used a slight bit of cropping, but this is definitely your best shot of the game. Great work.
Amanda: I have one complaint about this, and that's the lack of a setting. Studio shoots for a "crazy" theme like this don't exactly work well, in my opinion. But the posing, the styling, and that hair... the hair really is what sells this as Avant-Garde for me (even though I don't completely know what is and what isn't, either). This is a major improvement from last week's disaster, and you have absolutely nothing to worry about.
Emma: And there she is, back again. A much needed improvement from last week. I can't say with certainty that this is completely Avant Garde (but who am I to complain about that, as I placed LAST in this photo shoot for season 1 because I really struggled with the Avant Garde concept). However, the shot is stunning, in my opinion. The pose is awesome. The dress, elegant. I think that the veil and headpiece are the small elements that make this work as possibly crossing into an Avant Garde feel. Solid work, and I think it should have you moving forward. Good job.
Jennifer: Way to step it up this week! I don't think the dress itself is avant garde but the head piece and hair make it so it is. This is a strong pose and I like how the placement of your hands. Well done!
Jensen: Great job! Love your pose and fierceness!! Just learn to crop a bit.
Madonna
Bingbing: I do like that the fashion is a bit different and you're taking a chance here. Your features look a little more masculine than normal and it's a bit off-putting. That's probably my only complaint here, though. I like the risk-taking that was done here.
Amanda: Striking yes. But like Emma, I can't decide where to focus on - maybe it is that eye patch, which isn't really something you want people to draw attention to. I don't like eye patches, because having one makes it hard to be beautiful and modelesque. And yet... you manage to pull that off pretty well. There's also that this is your second black-and-white photo and also your second cover-at-least-one eye photo, but that's not really a big deal as of now as long as you show variety later. I don't really have any other complaints. I like it, but don't completely love it, either.
Emma: Aye, aye! Shiver me timbers, this be a strikin' photo! I'm just a little lost on the overal cohesiveness here. I love the modelling, and I think it's a unique picture, which makes me think Avant Garde. I'm just not sure where to focus... the eye-patch? The over-sized accessories? The brass knuckles? It's a little costumey for me, but it's a nice photo, and it's memorable.
Jennifer: Another winner! I love this, its a strong, unique photo that fits the theme but is also fashionable. It is a little busy with all the accessories involved but I personally don't find it overwhelming. Well done!
Jensen: Beautiful. And perfect. I really love that you can step outside of the box and give us what we need.
Megan
Bingbing: I don't mind your headpiece at all. It's not my favorite position for it, but the piece itself is not bothering me. The dress is also a bit interesting, so that's nice for this round. We do have that issue with the quality of the shot and then also your eyes squinting like that. The outdoor lighting probably isn't doing you any favors here. It's also slightly too large for my tastes as I have to scroll a little to see all of it. It's not your most successful shot, but it's still works for this round and you'll be fine.
Amanda: The quality IS off because this is a magazine scan. There's text on it, and the text itself is fuzzy. The entire image is like that. I agree with what Emma said, mostly. I don't really like that "funky" hairpiece, though. Don't know if it works on you, and the shadows and blackness in the leaves behind it too make it seem off to me. It's still avant-garde, but it's not my favorite. Not as great of a photo as last round, but it fits the theme more and still seems to be modeling.
Emma: Ok, so I only have 3 critiques. I know that sounds like a lot, but I do like this photo. 1: The shadow covering her eyes makes me lose a little interest in her face. 2: The image quality here is poor. 3: We lose a little bit of the natural lines of her body in the lace fabric. I enjoy the softness of this picture, and think it fits the theme well.
Jennifer: I'm not a big fan of this shot because I think you, as a model, get lost in it. The head piece is too close to your eyes and it takes away from your facial expression. I also don't like how we've lost your silhouette in it either. However, I do think you got the theme down, which is commendable considering how many models (including yourself) struggled.
Jensen: The dress and the hair piece sell this amazingly. I don't like the shadows on your eyes. The quality is off but who cares. You did a great job Megan.
Nico
Bingbing: Color, color, color, color, color, color, color (take that Jensen and Nico!). I absolutely love your outfit here. I think that you could benefit a bit from some stronger lighting or it being a color shot so that we could see the details of the outfit a bit easier, but we can mostly see it and it's great and different. It's a solid photo, but like Amanda said, stops just short of being spectacular. Still, strong effort for a difficult theme.
Amanda: I don't totally understand the concept, either, because it's too obscure to describe with words. I also felt that the men were in trouble here, but like Emma said, you didn't back down and tried your best. Like Emma, I also want this in colour (yes, I'm spelling it the Canadian way for you ). I don't really have any remarks on this either way - it's a good photo, but isn't the most special thing in the world. You're definitely modeling and the hair works, but I don't see anything extremely memorable about it. You shouldn't worry, though!
Emma: I like this photo the way it is, but for the purpose of really being able to sell the Avant Garde nature of your outfit, I really wish I could have seen it in color. For any other theme, I like the black and white for this shot. With that said, I think all the men had a mini heart-attack when they saw the theme for this week, but as I said with James, I appreciate that you didn't back down. I see where you're going with the leather idea, and I can buy that to an extent. Props for a strong photo, and I don't see why your stretch to fit the theme shouldn't be at least considered. Good work, again, Nico.
Jennifer: Another crowd pleaser from you Nico. I actually really like this. You and the other male models had it rough this week but I think you were able to sell the theme here. I interpret your pose here as a little avant garde too which obviously works in your favor. Overall, well done!
Jensen: I like this. Are those also suspenders over the jacket? That makes it even weirder and Avant Garde is weird lol I think you did a great job. Amanda means she's spelling colour the RIGHT way not just the Canadian way
Selena
Bingbing: You really could have benefited from a larger photo so that it would feel more impactful, but still that dress is fantastic and I love the thought behind the shot itself. It's striking and memorable. A larger size likely would be my only wish for this photo.
Amanda: I see Little Red Riding Hood meets Avant-Garde here, and I'm not sure what the split is. It's a mix of the two, so it at least somewhat fits the theme. The wolves do distract from you, and your face looks weird to me, like you're forcing it too much to the point it doesn't come across as natural. I like the setting, I like the dress, and the concept is solid, so you should be fine. Good work!
Emma: That dress is DIVINE! Though, seeing that you're clearly going for the icnoic Little Red Riding Hood, I see more costume than Avant Garde. You're a little small, and the wolves might take away from some of your attention, but overall, the picture is fun and interesting. I wish I could see more of that hair, because I feel like it gives you a maturity that will help diversify your younger portfolio shots. Not bad this week. Keep up the good work!
Jennifer: Obviously the first thought that comes to mind is Red Riding Hood. But I think you can get away with it given the theme. Overall, this is a stunning photo and it draws me in. I would have preferred to see you up front more but alas. Good work!
Jensen: oh la la!! Great job Selena. Your modeling is really good and the dress is very cool. A bit more cropping and make this larger though would be better because the smaller the face the more awkward it looks.
Tulisa
Bingbing: Welcome to the competition, Tulisa. By far the best photo you've given us so far. The fashion is fantastic and this is definitely a striking photo. I don't mind your expression in the photo, but that could be because of the different angle we're getting from you that is giving that expression a different feeling. I do wish the top of your head wasn't cut off, but other than that, this is a really strong photo. Good work.
Amanda: Yes, color. Yes, cropping. Yes, eyes. I don't know if the eyes are a problem with connection or due to the insane amount of makeup splattered all over them. Thick, dark eyeshadow doesn't really work well in a black-and-white shoot because it makes you look sleepy and/or crying. Still, this is a strong photo and a major improvement over last week - you have a solid dress, are fitting the theme, and are modeling much better. I like it, but like many others this round, don't love it.
Emma: Tulisa, this is by far your best submission yet, at least in my opinion. You weren't the only model to go black and white this round, and while I do love myself a good b/w photo, I really feel that, for the sake of Avant Garde, color can make a world of difference. That said, I like this fashion, and I think you're improving with this shot. Bring those eyes to meet the camera in this instance, and BAM, this would be a lot more intense to match that sassy pose. Good job, and I hope it keeps you around so that you can keep improving!
Jennifer: To second every other judge, this is by far your best submission yet! However, I have a slight pet peeve with the shininess/washout portions of your face, it takes away from an otherwise stellar shot. It's an excellent pose and I love how you make it look so effortless. Well done!
Jensen: Good job. I haven't been impressed by you yet and now I am. Work on a better expression though please. Your face seems to be your downfall.
Yoon
Bingbing: It's a very beautiful dress and a nice angle for the shot, but I'm not sure this is right for this theme. The other judges have covered everything I have to say about this shot. I'm sure you'll recover from this and it's just a single misstep.
Amanda: This is too basic for my understanding of Avant-Garde. You look like a model here for sure though, and I do like the setting - it's just a bit overwhelming, as Emma said. I really don't have anything to add to hers - I'm disappointed, but you don't need to worry. This isn't bad. It just isn't good, either.
Emma: I'm sad to say that, for me, this isn't what I was hoping to see from you. I've really thought you did well so far, and so, I was really excited to see what Avant Garde fashion you could bring. The problem is, as elegant as the dress is, it's forgettable when compared to the other fasion we've seen this week. As well, my focus went straight to the wall beside you, as I thought it was a monument at first, and it captured my attention before you and your orange dress. This isn't a horrible picture, but I can't say that I feel it will keep you in the top of the group. You'll bounce back though, so no worries there. I do like the expression, as it makes me feel something (thought I'm not sure what, lol). Take this week and grow from it. I struggled with Avant Garde last season, and still came back strong.
Jennifer: I appreciate that you are vertical in this shot, thanks for humoring me. As for other stuff, I second the other judge's critiques on this one. It's a nice shot but wrong theme. And unfortunately, I value a strong theme connection. But it's just one round, I expect you to bounce back just fine.
Jensen: It's a gorgeous photo, but just not working for the theme at hand. You have no worries though.
We'll start off by critiquing all of the photos this round.
Deepika
